Maybe You Didn’t Know

Melville spent time at sea, and he takes care to describe the whaler’s world in detail.

Early in the book, Melville cites the case of the Essex, a whaleship sunk by a whale in 1820; the ship Union, sunk in 1807; and several other whale attacks.

The omens Ahab ignores include a sea-hawk stealing his hat, the ship struck by lightning, sperm whales encircling the ship, fish that had been following the boat switching to another boat, two reports from whaleships damaged or losing crew to Moby Dick, two boats stove in by Moby, and Ahab’s artificial leg smashed by the whale.

Ahab wonders how much control we have over our own actions.

The Pequod’s crew is multinational, including Dutch, Danish, Chinese, Portugese, Spanish, Irish, at least two Muslims, and a cannibal.

Melville credits the success or failure of a voyage to the ship’s harpooners.
